Algiers, the capital of Algeria, lies on the Mediterranean, surrounded by the hills of the Sahel. It is the country's main economic and cultural centre, with textile, refining and cement industries. Algeria's largest commercial port is also located here. The city has historic roots reaching back to Roman times. Its Mediterranean climate brings mild winters and hot summers.
