The Netherlands, officially the Kingdom of the Netherlands, lies in western Europe and in the Caribbean. It comprises the European part along with the autonomous countries of Aruba, Curacao and Sint Maarten. It is a densely populated state in which a quarter of the territory lies below sea level. Amsterdam, the capital, is famous for its canals and museums, while The Hague is the seat of international tribunals. The temperate climate, with mild winters and warm summers, makes it welcoming all year round.
